Geophagus

Freshwater Geophagus, also known as eartheaters, are a group of cichlid fish native to South America. They are popular in the aquarium hobby due to their interesting behavior and colorful appearance. Geophagus are named for their habit of sifting through the substrate with their mouths, which creates a cloud of sand or gravel that allows them to search for food. They are generally peaceful and can be kept with other similar-sized, non-aggressive fish in a community tank. However, they can become territorial during breeding and may require a larger tank with plenty of hiding places. With proper care and a suitable environment, freshwater Geophagus can thrive in captivity and make fascinating additions to an aquarium.
