Geophagus Altifrons Alenquer is a captivating species known for its vibrant coloration and impressive size. As one of the largest geophagus species, it is highly sought after by enthusiasts. These peaceful fish are native to the diverse rivers and streams of the Amazon River basin in South America.

Similar to other Geophagus species, Altifrons engages in continuous sand sifting to find its food. Their base color ranges from tan to gray, accompanied by subtle vertical banding. The flanks of these fish display scales with a captivating iridescence, shimmering in shades of gold-orange to blue-green.

Distinctive patterns of gold-orange to blue-green adorn their operculum, while their translucent fins feature an array of blue-green to orange-red markings. Notably, Altifrons exhibit a black ocellus spot on and below their upper lateral line, albeit with varying intensity. Determining the sex of these fish can be challenging, but generally, males tend to be larger than females.
