Species Background

The hoplo catfish (Megalechis thoracata) is a robust species native to slow‑moving streams and floodplains. The albino form displays pinkish skin and translucent fins. Hoplos grow to about 6 inches and make engaging additions to larger aquariums.

Aquarium Setup

  • Tank size: A 40‑gallon aquarium accommodates a small group. They enjoy sandy substrates for burrowing and searching for food.
  • Water: Maintain temperatures of 72–79 °F and a pH of 6.0–7.5. Provide moderate flow and excellent filtration.
  • Décor: Offer hiding spots with caves, driftwood and dense planting. They are most active at dusk and dawn.

Diet and Behaviour

Hoplo catfish are omnivorous scavengers. Feed sinking pellets, bloodworms, chopped earthworms and blanched vegetables. They will also eat small crustaceans and may prey on tiny fish or shrimp, so choose tank mates accordingly.

Being social fish, keep them in groups of three or more. In well‑designed aquaria with live plants for fish tanks, they exhibit natural digging behaviour and will even “creep” along the substrate using their pectoral fins. With proper care, albino hoplos live over five years and may breed in captivity.
