The Cyrtocara moorii, commonly known as the Blue Dolphin Cichlid, is a peaceful and distinctive freshwater fish native to Lake Malawi in East Africa. It’s named after its dolphin-like head shape and smooth, metallic blue coloration that becomes more vibrant with age and good care.

Quick Facts:

• Common Name: Blue Dolphin Cichlid

• Scientific Name: Cyrtocara moorii

• Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa

• Size: Up to 8–10 inches (20–25 cm) in captivity

• Lifespan: Around 8–10 years with proper care

• Temperament: Peaceful (for a cichlid), but can be territorial

• Care Level: Intermediate

Tank Requirements:

• Tank Size: Minimum 75 gallons for adults

• Water Temp: 76–82°F (24–28°C)

• pH Level: 7.5–8.5 (alkaline)

• Substrate: Sand is ideal; they enjoy sifting through it

• Décor: Open swimming space, with rocks for occasional hiding

• Tank Mates: Other peaceful Malawi Haps or similar-sized, non-aggressive cichlids

• Avoid Mbunas or overly aggressive fish

Diet:

• Omnivorous — prefers:

• High-quality pellets or flakes designed for cichlids

• Occasional frozen or live foods like brine shrimp or bloodworms

• Avoid overfeeding protein to prevent bloating

Behavior:

• Known for their graceful, slow-swimming behavior

• Males develop nuchal humps (rounded heads) as they mature

• Peaceful and do well in groups of 1 male with several females

• Mouthbrooders: Females carry fertilized eggs in their mouths until fry are ready to be released

Fun Fact:

Despite being called “dolphin cichlids,” they have no relation to marine dolphins — the name comes from their humpbacked silhouette and gliding swimming style.
