Blue Eyed Royal Pleco

The Blue Eyed Pleco, also known as the Blue Eye Panaque, has long been regarded as a highly sought-after fish in the aquarium hobby. Although it has become more readily available in recent years, it remains a captivating and impressive species. Like many other Panaque species, it originates from fast-moving waters, specifically the Rio Magdalena in Colombia. Previously, accessing this region was challenging due to the presence of guerrilla and paramilitary forces, but the situation has since improved.

In aquariums, Blue Eyed Plecos are generally hardy, but they thrive when provided with moderate to strong water current and an abundance of driftwood. Driftwood serves both as a hiding place and a source of food for them. It is important to note that all Panaque species are wood eaters, and to ensure their proper nutrition, it is recommended to use specialized diets such as Repashy's Morning Wood.

By simulating their natural habitat with moderate to strong water flow and incorporating plenty of driftwood, aquarists can create an ideal environment for Blue Eyed Plecos. The availability of this species has increased, but it still retains its showy and captivating qualities, making it a desirable addition to aquariums.
