Species Overview

The chocolate silver arowana (Osteoglossum bicirrhosum) is a colour morph of the South American silver arowana. These “dragon fish” have elongated bodies, large scales and whisker‑like barbels. Juveniles are often chocolate‑brown but gradually shift to silver with age.

Housing and Water Conditions

  • Tank size: Start young fish in a 180‑gallon aquarium, but plan for at least 300 gallons as they approach 90 cm. Provide a tight‑fitting lid; arowanas are notorious jumpers.
  • Water: Maintain temperatures of 78–82 °F and a pH of 6.0–7.5. Gentle surface current and excellent filtration keep oxygen high and water clear.
  • Décor: Use driftwood and low, robust plants along the perimeter, leaving open space for swimming.

Diet and Care

Arowanas are carnivorous surface feeders. Offer floating pellets, frozen shrimp, krill and occasional insects. Young fish may require frozen bloodworms before accepting pellets. Feed small amounts several times a day.

Because of their size and lifespan, these fish require commitment. Monitor water quality closely and perform frequent water changes. Including perimeter live plants for fish tanks can help stabilise water parameters and provide a sense of security. With patience and proper husbandry, chocolate silver arowanas become impressive focal points that glide gracefully just beneath the surface.
