Hoplisoma sp. aff. concolor “Rio Tomo” (CW217) is a locality-specific armored catfish originating from the upper Rio Tomo drainage in the Orinoco basin of Colombia. Preliminary observations suggest it belongs to the concolor complex, but its distinct patterning, body proportions, and fin pigmentation indicate a potentially separate, undescribed taxon.
In the wild, CW217 is associated with slow to moderately flowing blackwater environments with sandy or fine-leaf-litter substrates, where it forages on micro-invertebrates and organic detritus. Aquarium behavior reflects this ecology: they are highly social, maintain tight shoaling formations, and show increased activity when kept in groups of six or more.
Compared to similar species, individuals from the Rio Tomo population display more uniform body coloration with subtle bronze or olive tones and reduced spotting, giving them a “cleaner” aesthetic. Their resilience, adaptability, and calm disposition make them suitable for advanced hobbyists interested in maintaining rare Corydoradinae forms while contributing to understanding this still-poorly-studied lineage.
