The Distichodus lefini is a species of freshwater fish belonging to the Distichodus genus, primarily found in the Lefini River, a tributary of the Congo River in Central Africa. This species is known for its striking appearance, often displaying a combination of dark and reddish hues, making it a sought-after specimen for specialized aquarium enthusiasts. Like other members of the Distichodus genus, it possesses a laterally compressed body and elongated shape, which aids in swift movement through fast-flowing waters.

In the wild, Distichodus lefini inhabits riverine environments with moderate to strong currents, where it primarily feeds on plant matter, algae, and small invertebrates. Its diet suggests an omnivorous tendency, though it leans heavily towards herbivory. Due to its potential size and active nature, it requires a spacious aquarium with ample swimming room, strong filtration, and a diet rich in plant-based foods to maintain optimal health in captivity.

Behaviorally, Distichodus lefini can be semi-aggressive, particularly towards smaller or similarly shaped fish. It is best housed with robust tankmates that can tolerate its energetic and sometimes territorial nature. Given its specific care requirements and active disposition, this species is more suited for experienced aquarists who can provide the necessary space and environmental conditions to support its well-being.
