About Garra Rufa
Garra rufa, commonly called doctor fish or nibble fish, gained fame for removing dead skin during spa treatments. In the wild they inhabit fast‑flowing, mineral‑rich streams in Turkey, Syria and Iraq.
Aquarium Setup
- Tank size: A group of six requires at least 30 gallons. These fish appreciate strong currents and oxygenated water.
- Water conditions: Maintain temperatures between 68–77 °F and a pH of 6.5–7.5. Use a powerhead or river manifold to simulate flow.
- Décor: Provide smooth rocks and pebbles for grazing and resting. Planting hardy live plants for fish tanks like Anubias on wood enhances aesthetics and water quality.
Diet and Care
In home aquaria they feed on algae, biofilm and sinking wafers. Supplement with blanched vegetables and high‑quality pellets. As social fish, they thrive in groups and display playful behaviour, attaching themselves to glass or rocks.
They pose no harm to humans and coexist with peaceful community fish, but avoid housing them with aggressive tank mates. With cool, fast‑moving water and proper diet, doctor fish not only contribute to algae control but also offer constant activity.
