Bagarius vegrandis is a species of freshwater catfish belonging to the Sisoridae family, commonly referred to as the dwarf goonch catfish. This species was described in 2019 and is one of the smaller members of the Bagarius genus, which includes several species of predatory catfish found in fast-flowing rivers across South and Southeast Asia.
Characteristics:
• Size: Compared to other Bagarius species, B. vegrandis is relatively small, typically reaching around 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
• Body Shape: Like its relatives, it has a robust body, a broad, flattened head, and a large mouth with strong jaw muscles.
• Coloration: Generally brownish or gray with mottled patterns, allowing for excellent camouflage among riverbeds.
• Fins: Possesses strong pectoral fins that help it maintain stability in fast currents.
Habitat & Distribution:
• Found in fast-moving, oxygen-rich rivers, particularly in Myanmar and surrounding regions.
• Prefers rocky or gravel substrates where it can ambush prey.
Diet & Behavior:
• Carnivorous, primarily feeding on smaller fish and invertebrates.
• Highly adapted to strong currents, using its powerful body to remain anchored in turbulent waters.
Aquarium Care:
• Tank Size: Requires a large aquarium (at least 75-100 gallons) due to its active nature.
• Water Flow: Strong filtration and high oxygenation are necessary to mimic its natural habitat.
• Diet: Carnivorous, prefers live or frozen foods such as shrimp, small fish, and worms.
• Tank Mates: Best kept alone or with similarly robust species, as it may prey on smaller fish.
This species is not as commonly available in the aquarium trade as some of its larger relatives, but its relatively small size makes it an intriguing choice for advanced fish keepers who specialize in riverine predatory species.
