About Figure Eight Puffers

Figure eight puffers (Tetraodon biocellatus) are small, attractive fish recognised by two dark “figure‑eight” patterns on their back. They inhabit tidal estuaries in Southeast Asia where freshwater mixes with seawater.

Water and Tank Requirements

  • Brackish conditions: Maintain a specific gravity of 1.005–1.010 by mixing marine salt into freshwater. Use a hydrometer or refractometer to monitor salinity.
  • Tank size: A single puffer needs at least 20 gallons; a pair requires larger tanks with plenty of territories.
  • Décor: Provide rocks, branches and hardy plants tolerant of brackish water. Keep a tight lid, as puffers can jump.

Diet and Compatibility

Figure eight puffers are predators that feed on snails, crustaceans and insects. Offer ramshorn snails, bloodworms, clams and frozen krill to keep their beaks trimmed. They can be semi‑aggressive; best kept singly or in species tanks. If housed with others, choose hardy brackish fish like mollies and archerfish.

These puffers are intelligent and interactive, recognising their owners and following them across the glass. Provide environmental enrichment and maintain water parameters diligently. Using salt‑tolerant live plants for fish tanks not only enhances décor but also helps manage nitrates in a brackish setup.
