Description

The Harlequin Marbled Lancer Catfish (Bagroides melapterus) is a fascinating species that hails from Southeast Asia, primarily from rivers in Borneo and Sumatra. Known for its striking marbled pattern of dark and light patches, this catfish has a sleek, elongated body that can reach up to 12-16 inches in length, making it a larger species suited for sizable aquariums.

In terms of care, the Harlequin Marbled Lancer thrives in well-oxygenated water with a moderate current, simulating its natural river habitat. Ideal water parameters are a pH of 6.5-7.5, a temperature range of 75-82°F (24-28°C), and a sturdy filtration system due to its messy eating habits. These fish are generally nocturnal and can be a bit shy, often hiding during the day. They appreciate a setup with plenty of hiding spots, like rocks, caves, and driftwood.

In terms of temperament, they’re mostly peaceful but may prey on smaller fish. They are carnivorous and enjoy a diet of meaty foods, like bloodworms, shrimp, and cut fish. This species does best with tank mates that are similarly sized and have a similar temperament.
