Species Overview
Honey gouramis (Trichogaster chuna) are gentle fish that glow with shades of gold, orange and brown. Males develop deeper colours during breeding and use their elongated pelvic fins to explore their surroundings.
Tank and Water Conditions
- Tank size: A trio can live comfortably in a 10‑gallon tank; larger groups benefit from more space.
- Water: Maintain warm, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.5) at 77–82 °F. Use gentle filtration and cover the tank to protect their labyrinth organ.
- Décor: Plant densely and include floating plants to diffuse light. Honey gouramis appreciate calm waters.
Diet and Breeding
These gouramis are omnivores. Offer high‑quality flakes, micro pellets and live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia. Males build bubble nests at the surface. After spawning, remove the female to prevent harassment. Fry feed on infusoria and powdered foods.
Honey gouramis coexist well with small rasboras, Corydoras and shrimps. Avoid housing them with nippy fish. Providing floating live plants for fish tanks encourages nest building and offers fry shelter. With a peaceful environment, these gouramis add a touch of warmth and serenity to your aquarium.
