Species Overview
The L191 green royal pleco (Panaque cf. nigrolineatus “Green”) is a striking loricariid distinguished by its olive body, orange eyes and high back. It comes from fast‑flowing rivers in Colombia and Peru.
Tank Setup
- Aquarium size: Provide at least a 100‑gallon tank with ample bottom space.
- Décor: Offer caves, driftwood and rockwork to create dark refuges. The species feeds on wood fibre, so real driftwood is essential.
- Water: Maintain temperatures of 76–84 °F and good oxygenation. Stable conditions are critical; avoid rapid fluctuations.
Diet and Behaviour
Green royal plecos are primarily xylivorous, meaning they rasp wood as part of their diet. Supplement with algae wafers, blanched vegetables and high‑quality pellets designed for plecos. They are shy initially but become more confident when provided with plenty of hiding spots.
Because of their sensitivity, regular monitoring of temperature and water quality is important. Planting robust live plants for fish tanks around driftwood helps create shade and improves water quality. With patience and proper care, these regal plecos will display their full coloration and become a centrepiece catfish.
