The L20 Polka Dot Pleco, scientifically known as Spectracanthicus zuanoni, is a captivating freshwater catfish celebrated for its dark body adorned with striking white polka dots. This species originates from Brazil’s Amazon Basin, specifically thriving in the clear, warm waters of the Rio Tapajós and Rio Curuá-Una, characterized by moderate to swift currents and high oxygen levels.

Physical Characteristics:

The L20 Polka Dot Pleco can grow up to approximately 10 inches (25 cm) in length. Its distinctive polka dot pattern remains prominent throughout its life, adding a unique aesthetic to aquariums.

Aquarium Requirements:

• Tank Size: A minimum of a 5-foot (150 cm) tank is recommended to accommodate its territorial nature and provide ample space.

• Water Parameters:

• Temperature: 79–87°F (26–30°C)

• pH: 5.0–7.0

• Hardness: 5–15 dGH

• Environment: Incorporate plenty of hiding spots using driftwood, caves, and rocky structures to mimic its natural habitat and reduce stress. Efficient filtration and regular water changes are crucial to maintain water quality.

Diet and Feeding:

Primarily omnivorous, the L20 Polka Dot Pleco thrives on a balanced diet that includes:

• Algae wafers

• Blanched vegetables

• Live or frozen foods such as bloodworms

Ensuring a varied diet supports their health and vibrant coloration.

Behavior and Compatibility:

Generally peaceful and reclusive, this pleco can exhibit territorial behavior, especially towards conspecifics or similarly shaped species. It’s best housed with other peaceful, similarly sized fish like small to medium tetras or rasboras. Avoid pairing with overly aggressive or large predatory fish to maintain harmony in the aquarium.
