Panther crabs (Parathelphusa pantherina) originate from Indonesian lakes and swamps. Their spotted carapace and semi‑terrestrial lifestyle make them popular in paludariums.
Habitat Requirements
- Land and water: Provide a large aquarium with 50% land area using rocks, driftwood or coconut huts. The water depth can be shallow but must be filtered and heated to 72–82 °F.
- Water chemistry: Maintain a stable pH of 7.0–8.0 and moderate hardness. Use a secure lid to prevent escapes; crabs climb well.
- Décor: Offer numerous hiding spots to reduce territorial disputes; plants, caves and leaf litter work well.
Feeding and Social Behaviour
Panther crabs are omnivorous. Feed algae wafers, blanched vegetables, snails, insects and sinking pellets. Occasional protein foods keep them in good condition. They can cohabit with peaceful fish and shrimp but may prey on smaller tank mates if underfed. Provide ample space for each crab to minimise fighting.
A planted, well‑structured paludarium with live plants for fish tanks supports humidity and offers cover. With careful planning and maintenance, panther crabs bring fascinating semi‑terrestrial behaviour and bold markings to your collection.
