Species Background
The platinum redtail catfish is a selectively bred colour variant of the giant redtail catfish (Phractocephalus hemioliopterus). In the wild these predators patrol deep river channels searching for fish, crustaceans and carrion. Their body is torpedo‑shaped with a broad, reddish caudal fin and whisker‑like barbels.
Housing Needs
- Size: Juveniles grow quickly; adults exceed three feet and can weigh over 100 pounds. House them in indoor ponds of 1,000 gallons or more.
- Water: Maintain temperatures of 75–82 °F with neutral pH. Use heavy filtration and regular water changes to manage waste.
- Décor: Provide smooth substrates and large pieces of driftwood. Ensure the environment is free of sharp objects.
Feeding and Behaviour
Redtail catfish are voracious carnivores. Feed them a varied diet of fish fillets, shrimp, crayfish and sinking carnivore pellets. Juveniles may accept frozen foods but will soon need large portions. They are solitary and should not be housed with anything they can swallow.
Keeping this species is a long‑term endeavour that requires planning and resources. To soften the stark look of a pond, use floating live plants for fish tanks around the edges. These provide shade, help improve water quality and make the environment feel more natural.
