Species Profile
The red severum (Heros efasciatus) is a colour morph of the common severum. Its orange‑red body and black speckling make it a showy yet gentle cichlid. Mature fish reach 8–10 inches and live 10–15 years with proper care.
Housing and Water Parameters
- Tank size: Keep a pair or small group in a 75‑gallon tank or larger.
- Water: Maintain temperatures of 76–82 °F and a pH of 6.5–7.5. Moderate flow and regular water changes promote health.
- Decor: Provide wood, rocks and sturdy plants for cover. Leave open swimming areas.
Diet and Tank Mates
Red severums are omnivores. Feed them a varied diet of cichlid pellets, flakes, blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach) and occasional protein like earthworms or shrimp. They coexist well with silver dollars, peaceful catfish and larger tetras. Avoid housing them with very small fish they might eat.
Severums appreciate natural surroundings. Adding rooted live plants for fish tanks such as Amazon swords or anubias offers refuge and mimics their flooded forest habitats. With good care, their colours intensify and they may even pair up and lay eggs on flat surfaces.
