Species Profile

Rope fish (Erpetoichthys calabaricus) have elongated, snake‑like bodies with dorsal finlets that run along their back. Native to slow, swampy waters in West and Central Africa, they prefer dusk and night time and often wedge themselves under roots or rocks during the day.

Habitat and Tank Requirements

  • Aquarium: Provide a tank at least 55 gallons with a tight‑fitting lid. Rope fish are masters of escape and will slither through gaps.
  • Substrate: Use soft sand or fine gravel to protect their belly and encourage burrowing. Add driftwood, caves and dense plants to create shaded retreats.
  • Water conditions: Keep water slightly alkaline (pH 7.0–8.0) at 74–82 °F with moderate hardness. Gentle filtration and plenty of oxygen are important, though rope fish can gulp air if necessary.

Diet and Companions

These carnivores feed on insects, small fish and crustaceans. Offer a varied diet of bloodworms, earthworms, prawn and high‑quality meaty pellets. Introduce food at night when they are most active. Rope fish are peaceful toward similar‑sized tank mates but may eat small fish. Suitable companions include larger tetras, barbs and catfish.

Rope fish appreciate lush surroundings. Incorporating rooted live plants for fish tanks along with floating cover gives them security and enriches their environment. With secure lids and careful feeding, these unusual fish become intriguing, long‑lived pets.
