Endlicheri Polypterus
The Endlicheri Bichir, also known as the Saddled Bichir, is a widely distributed species of Polypterus found in various slow-moving shallow water habitats across West and Central Africa. This Bichir species is characterized by its large size and heavy body, with individuals in the wild reaching lengths of over 30 inches (76 cm). Therefore, providing an appropriately large aquarium is necessary for their long-term housing.
Belonging to the "lower jaw" group of Polypterus, the Endlicheri Bichir features a distinctive heavy lower jaw that protrudes over the upper lip. In aquarium settings, they exhibit hardiness and undemanding behavior similar to other bichir species. However, it is crucial to keep them in an aquarium with a secure and tightly-fitting lid, possibly weighted, as they have a tendency to jump when startled or during nighttime activity.
