The candy cane tetra, also known as the hyphessobrycon sp. "candy stripe" or the striped bloodfin tetra, is a freshwater fish species that is native to the Amazon basin in South America. It is a popular choice for aquarium enthusiasts due to its striking coloration and peaceful nature.
Candy cane tetras are relatively small, growing up to about 2 inches in length. They have a distinct silver body with red and white horizontal stripes along their sides. The fins are also red in coloration, with a black stripe along the dorsal fin.
In the wild, candy cane tetras inhabit slow-moving and heavily vegetated streams and rivers. In the aquarium, they require similar conditions with soft, slightly acidic water and plenty of plants to provide cover and hiding places.
Candy cane tetras are peaceful and can be kept in a community aquarium with other small to medium-sized non-aggressive fish species. They are omnivorous and will readily accept a variety of foods, including flakes, pellets, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia.
