Polypterus
Freshwater polypterus, commonly known as the bichir, are a unique and fascinating species of fish that have been around for over 400 million years. They have an elongated body and a primitive, armored appearance with a row of bony plates running along their sides. Bichirs are known for their ability to breathe air and are often seen swimming at the surface, taking in gulps of air. They are carnivorous and will eat a variety of foods, including live and frozen foods, and even pellets. Bichirs are generally peaceful but can be aggressive towards other bichirs, especially during breeding. They can also jump out of tanks, so a tight-fitting lid is necessary. Bichirs can live for over 20 years and are a great choice for experienced fish keepers looking for an unusual and hardy species to add to their aquarium.
