Nerite Snails are highly effective algae eaters and are ideal for keeping in planted tanks. They are low-maintenance and easy to care for. These snails exclusively feed on algae, and even a small group of them can quickly clean a large aquarium covered in diatoms. However, if they consume all the available algae, it may be necessary to supplement their diet with algae wafers or blanched vegetables. The advantage is that they have no interest in consuming plant leaves, so your aquascape remains undisturbed.
When selecting tank mates for Nerite Snails, it is important to avoid species that prey on snails. This includes Loaches, Crayfish, Large Cichlids, Goldfish, and other larger predatory species. Suitable companions for Nerites include Amano Shrimp, Neocardina Shrimp, Caridina Shrimp, Oticinclus, Siamese Algae Eaters, Tetras, Cories, Bettas, and other peaceful fish. These combinations have been successful in our Buce tanks.
A few notes on Nerite Snails:
- Breeding Nerite snails requires brackish water, which is water with a lower salt content than seawater.
- The minimum recommended tank size for Nerite snails is 3-5 gallons. It is not recommended to keep them in smaller tanks because snails produce a significant amount of waste, which adds to the tank's bio-load.
