About Ranchu Goldfish
Ranchu goldfish are among the most prized fancy varieties. Bred for centuries in Japan, they lack a dorsal fin and have a pronounced back curve, giving them a rounded, sumo‑like silhouette. A fleshy head growth (wen) develops as they mature, adding to their charm.
Tank and Water Requirements
- Aquarium size: Provide at least 20 gallons for a single fish; larger tanks help maintain water quality.
- Water conditions: Keep temperatures between 68–74 °F with a stable pH around 7.0. Use gentle filtration and avoid strong currents to accommodate their poor swimming ability.
- Substrate & décor: Use smooth gravel or sand and avoid sharp decorations that could tear their delicate fins or wen.
Feeding and Care
Ranchus are omnivores. Offer a varied diet of sinking pellets, gel foods, blanched vegetables and occasional protein treats like bloodworms. Avoid floating foods to reduce air swallowing. Regular water changes are essential, and grooming the head growth may be necessary if it obscures vision.
Because they are slower swimmers, house ranchus with other fancy goldfish rather than fast species. Incorporating hardy live plants for fish tanks gives them grazing areas and improves water quality without creating strong currents. With proper care and a calm environment, these regal fish can live 10–15 years and become treasured members of your aquarium.
