Species Overview
The African butterfly fish (Pantodon buchholzi) inhabits still waters and sluggish streams in West Africa. Its upturned mouth and wide pectoral fins enable it to glide short distances across the water surface to escape predators.
Tank Setup
- Aquarium: A 30‑gallon tank with a large surface area suits a pair. Keep the water level a few inches from the top and cover the tank securely; these fish leap.
- Water: Maintain temperatures of 75–82 °F with a pH of 6.0–7.5. Still or gentle water flow replicates their natural habitat.
- Décor: Use floating plants like Salvinia and water lettuce to dim lighting and provide cover. Avoid strong currents that impede their surface hunting.
Diet and Behaviour
African butterfly fish are carnivorous surface feeders. They eat insects, spiders and small fish in the wild. Feed floating pellets, small crickets and frozen or live mosquito larvae. They prefer quiet tank mates that occupy lower levels; avoid fin‑nippers or fast swimmers.
Because they are specialised, plan your tank accordingly. Incorporating floating live plants for fish tanks adds security and helps mimic their natural environment. With proper care, these living fossils showcase fascinating hunting strategies and gliding displays.
