The Zaire Green Bichir, belonging to the "upper jaw" complex of Polypterus, is a medium-sized species that has recently become available in the trade. It was identified by scientists as the true P. retropinnis, distinguishing it from the newly described species P. mokelembebe that was often mistakenly sold as P. retropinnis in the past.
This species originates from moderate to fast-flowing waters within the Congo River basin in Central Africa.
