Species Overview
The dwarf chain loach (Ambastaia sidthimunki) is a lively, striped loach perfect for planted aquariums. Its interlocking black bands give it a distinctive appearance. At only 2 inches, these loaches are among the smallest of the botiid family.
Tank Environment
- Group size: Keep at least six individuals to encourage natural schooling and reduce aggression.
- Water: Provide well‑oxygenated water with good flow, a temperature of 72–79 °F and a pH of 6.0–7.5.
- Décor: Use sand or fine gravel and plenty of hiding places such as caves, wood and dense planting.
Feeding and Behaviour
Dwarf chain loaches are omnivores. They relish live foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp and readily accept quality sinking pellets and flakes. They also help control pest snails. While generally peaceful, they may nip slow or long‑finned fish if kept in too small a group.
Regular water changes and a stable environment keep them at their best. Adding resilient live plants for fish tanks provides cover, oxygen and microfauna for grazing. With proper care, these energetic loaches will thrive and bring constant activity to your aquarium.
