Species Highlights
The electric blue ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) is a stunning dwarf cichlid prized for its iridescent turquoise body and orange highlights. Selective breeding has enhanced its colour while retaining its peaceful nature.
Tank Requirements
- Tank size: A 20‑gallon tank suits a pair. Provide sand substrate and plenty of plants for cover.
- Water: Maintain soft, slightly acidic water (pH 5.5–7.0) at 78–84 °F. Stable parameters and pristine water are essential.
- Décor: Use driftwood, caves and broad leaves for spawning sites.
Diet and Breeding
Electric blue rams are omnivores. Feed high‑quality flakes, small pellets, frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp. They may pair off and spawn on flat surfaces; eggs hatch in 48 hours. Raising fry requires infusoria and micro foods.
Because these cichlids are sensitive, avoid aggressive tank mates. Suitable companions include small tetras, rasboras and corydoras. Creating a lush environment with live plants for fish tanks not only beautifies the aquarium but also provides hiding spots and helps maintain water quality. With proper conditions, electric blue rams reward keepers with vibrant colour and fascinating behaviour.
