Species Overview

Ember tetras (Hyphessobrycon amandae) are tiny gems that bring warm hues to the aquarium. Their translucent bodies glow orange when kept in the right conditions.

Tank Setup

  • Group size: Keep groups of at least eight; larger schools show better colour and reduce stress.
  • Water: Provide soft, slightly acidic water (pH 5.5–7.0) at 74–82 °F. Dark substrates and leaf litter enhance their colours.
  • Décor: Dense planting with floating plants offers security while leaving open swimming areas in the mid‑water column.

Feeding and Breeding

Ember tetras are omnivores that accept micro pellets, finely crushed flakes and small frozen foods. They scatter eggs among fine‑leafed plants. To breed, set up a separate tank with moss or spawning mops; remove adults after spawning.

These fish are peaceful and pair well with other small, gentle species. Planting live plants for fish tanks not only enhances aesthetics but also provides surfaces for egg scattering and microfauna for fry. Ember tetras are an excellent choice for both beginners and seasoned hobbyists looking to add warmth to nano aquariums.
