Description

Species Overview

Fahaka puffers (Tetraodon lineatus) inhabit African rivers such as the Nile and Niger. Their bold stripes and expressive eyes make them highly sought after. Unlike small puffers, Fahakas reach up to 18 inches and possess powerful fused teeth that grow continuously.

Housing and Water Conditions

  • Tank size: A single Fahaka requires at least a 125‑gallon aquarium. Provide caves, rocks and sand for burrowing.
  • Water quality: Keep water neutral to slightly alkaline (pH 7.0–8.0) at 75–80 °F. Use strong filtration and perform frequent water changes to handle their messy eating habits.
  • Décor: Use smooth decor and avoid sharp objects. Puffers like to explore and rearrange their environment.

Diet and Behaviour

Fahakas are molluscivores that need hard foods to wear down their teeth. Offer snails, mussels, clams, crab legs and crayfish. Supplement with occasional shrimp or fillets. They are best kept alone; even larger fish may be bitten. Enrichment such as puzzles and varied feeding sites reduces boredom.

Given their size, dedicated care is essential. Create a natural environment with driftwood and hardy live plants for fish tanks to provide cover and water quality benefits. With proper husbandry, these intelligent puffers become interactive pets and live over a decade.
