Species Characteristics

Threadfin rainbowfish are some of the most delicate rainbows. Males display elongated dorsal and anal fins that flow gracefully as they swim, while females have shorter fins and muted colours. These fish seldom grow beyond 2 inches.

Habitat and Care

  • Tank size: A 15‑gallon aquarium suffices for a small group. Keep them in groups of one male to several females to reduce stress.
  • Water: They prefer soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.5) at 74–82 °F. Use gentle filtration to avoid damaging their fins.
  • Décor: Create a densely planted setup with fine‑leafed plants and floating cover. Provide open areas for displaying males.

Diet and Behaviour

Threadfins are micropredators. Feed them freshly hatched brine shrimp, micro‑worms, cyclops and micro‑pellets. They are peaceful and pair well with other tiny species like dwarf rasboras, small shrimp and corys. Avoid housing them with fin‑nippers.

Because their fins are delicate, stable water quality and minimal current are vital. Planting lush live plants for fish tanks not only offers hiding spots but also supplies infusoria for young fry. With patience and proper care, threadfin rainbowfish display stunning courtship dances and become the highlight of nano tanks.
