Overview

Fire red oscars are a selectively bred variant of the common oscar cichlid. Their deep red colouring makes them a striking centrepiece but their size and intelligence mean they are only suited to aquarists with room and time. Adults reach 12–14 inches and live for over a decade with proper care.

Tank Setup

  • Space: Start with at least a 55‑gallon tank for juveniles. Adults need more than 100 gallons and robust filtration to handle their waste.
  • Water conditions: Keep water warm (75–82 °F) and slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.5–7.5). Weekly water changes and strong filtration are critical because oscars are messy eaters.
  • Décor: Provide a soft substrate and sturdy driftwood or rocks for hiding. Avoid delicate plants; oscars rearrange décor.

Feeding and Behaviour

Oscars are omnivores. Feed high‑quality pellets as a staple and supplement with frozen or live foods like shrimp and earthworms. Offer some vegetable matter such as blanched spinach or spirulina flakes. They recognise their keepers and will beg for food but can show aggression toward small tank mates. Choose companions like large catfish or robust cichlids.

Providing structure and environmental enrichment helps prevent boredom. Adding hardy live plants for fish tanks in secure pots can offer shade and improve water quality without being uprooted. Plan for long‑term care; these intelligent fish reward good husbandry with personality and colour.
