Description

Brachyplatystoma filamentosum, commonly known as the Piraíba, is one of the largest freshwater fish species on Earth and a true giant of the Amazon Basin. Belonging to the Pimelodidae family, this powerful river predator is built for life in fast-moving, sediment-rich waters, using its long barbels and keen senses to locate prey.

While juveniles may appear manageable and even display attractive striping, this species grows at an extraordinary rate and can exceed 10 feet in length, quickly outgrowing any conventional aquarium. As it matures, it becomes a highly active, open-water hunter requiring immense space, heavy filtration, and specialized care.

Due to its extreme size and predatory nature, Brachyplatystoma filamentosum is best suited for public aquariums or very large private pond systems, and is not appropriate for typical home aquarium setups.
