Peckoltia compta has a distinctive appearance, with a dark body coloration covered in bright white or yellow spots that resemble a leopard or tiger's pattern. The fish has a flattened head and a pair of tentacle-like growths around its mouth that it uses to scrape algae and other food from surfaces in the aquarium. It typically grows to a length of around 4-5 inches (10-13 cm), making it a relatively small species of pleco.

In the wild, Peckoltia compta is a nocturnal fish that feeds primarily on algae, but may also consume small invertebrates and other plant matter. In the aquarium, it should be fed a varied diet that includes sinking pellets, algae wafers, and fresh vegetables like zucchini or cucumber.

Peckoltia compta is generally a peaceful fish that can be kept in community aquariums with other non-aggressive fish. It is important to provide the fish with plenty of hiding places, such as caves or driftwood, as they can be somewhat shy and may become stressed if they feel exposed.

In terms of aquarium care, Peckoltia compta requires a well-filtered aquarium with good water flow. They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH between 6.5 and 7.5, and temperatures between 76-82°F (24-28°C). Regular water changes and proper maintenance of the aquarium are important to ensure the health and well-being of this species.
