Description

Species Overview

Tiger shovelnose catfish (Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum) inhabit South American river systems. Their elongated snout and bold patterning resemble a tiger’s stripes. Juveniles grow rapidly, soon outgrowing small tanks.

Housing Requirements

  • Tank or pond: Start with a 180‑gallon tank; adults need ponds of 500 gallons or more.
  • Water: Maintain warm water at 75–82 °F with a pH of 6.5–7.5. Provide robust filtration and a soft sand substrate.
  • Décor: Add large pieces of driftwood and PVC pipes to create dark caves and hiding spots.

Diet and Behaviour

These nocturnal predators feed on fish, crustaceans and insects. Offer cut fish fillets, shrimp, crayfish and specially formulated carnivore pellets. Feed after lights out to mimic natural behaviour. They are best kept alone or with equally large fish to avoid predation.

Given their immense size, tiger shovelnose catfish are suited only for experienced keepers with ample space. Adding floating live plants for fish tanks along pond edges provides shade, improves water quality and makes the habitat more natural for these river giants.
