Introducing Thai Micro Crabs

Thai micro crabs (Limnopilos naiyanetri) are tiny, delicate crustaceans that inhabit the roots of freshwater plants in Thai waterways. Measuring under half an inch, they spend much of their time clinging to wood and foliage and filter‑feeding on biofilm.

Habitat Design

  • Paludarium: A mixed land‑and‑water setup is ideal. Provide shallow water areas with emergent wood or stones where crabs can climb out to moult.
  • Water conditions: Maintain a pH of 7.0–8.0 and temperatures between 72–82 °F. Use gentle filtration; strong currents can flip them over.
  • Substrate & decor: Fine sand and mosses encourage natural behaviour. Include plenty of hiding spots to reduce stress.

Diet and Compatibility

Micro crabs are omnivorous scavengers. Feed powdered invertebrate foods, crushed snails and algae wafers. They will also graze on biofilm and plant detritus. Do not keep them with aggressive fish or large shrimp that may prey on them. Small rasboras, micro tetras or shrimp species like Amano make suitable tank mates.

Because of their minute size, micro crabs are adept climbers. A secure lid is essential to prevent escapes. Encouraging biofilm growth with live plants for fish tanks ensures continuous grazing surfaces and enriches their environment. With patience, these unusual pets bring a fascinating microcosm into your aquarium.
