Species Overview

Mudskippers are remarkable fish that thrive both in and out of water. Periophthalmus barbarus spends much of its life on muddy banks, using strong pectoral fins to “walk” and hop.

Habitat Setup

  • Paludarium design: Create a half‑land, half‑water enclosure with shallow, brackish water (specific gravity 1.005–1.015). Provide a sloping land area made of sand or mud and plenty of branches and roots to climb.
  • Lid: Use a tight‑fitting lid to maintain humidity and prevent escapes.
  • Water quality: Keep temperatures around 75–82 °F and a pH of 7.5–8.5. Cycle the system well to manage waste.

Diet and Behaviour

Mudskippers are omnivores. Feed small crickets, mealworms, frozen krill and occasional vegetable matter. They may spar over territory but settle into hierarchies in larger habitats.

Maintaining high humidity is crucial for skin respiration. Planting mangrove‑type live plants for fish tanks helps stabilise banks and provides shelter. A well‑designed mudskipper setup becomes a captivating, interactive display of amphibious behaviour.
