Introducing the Giant Gourami
The panda giant gourami is a rare colour variety of the giant gourami (Osphronemus goramy). These fish can grow to 2–3 feet long and weigh several pounds. Their broad heads, thick lips and ability to gulp air using a labyrinth organ make them unique among gouramis.
Tank and Water Needs
- Space: Juveniles can start in 75‑gallon tanks, but adults require ponds or aquaria of 200 gallons or larger. Provide floating plants and sturdy decorations that they cannot swallow.
- Water: Maintain warm temperatures (77–86 °F) with neutral pH (6.8–7.5). Ensure excellent filtration; these fish produce significant waste.
Feeding and Behaviour
Giant gouramis are omnivores that consume pellets, vegetables (lettuce, zucchini, peas) and occasional protein sources such as shrimp. They build bubble nests at the surface, and parents may guard eggs and fry. Though generally peaceful, they can be territorial with smaller fish.
Given their longevity (15 years or more), housing these giants requires a long‑term commitment. Planting large, sturdy live plants for fish tanks around the pond or tank provides shelter and aids in water quality. With proper care and a spacious home, panda giant gouramis become gentle centrepieces and rewarding pets.
