Description

Overview

Pea puffers (Carinotetraodon travancoricus) are among the smallest pufferfish kept in home aquariums. Their miniature size, curious eyes and lively personality make them fascinating residents for planted tanks. Native to slow-moving waters in India and Bangladesh, these fish reach only about an inch long, yet display bold behaviour.

Care Requirements

  • Tank size: A densely planted nano tank of at least 10 gallons gives them room to explore. Provide hiding spots with driftwood, moss and floating plants so they feel secure.
  • Water parameters: Keep the water between 74–82 °F with a pH of 7.0–8.0 and moderate hardness. Gentle filtration prevents stress.
  • Diet: Pea puffers are carnivores that thrive on live or frozen foods such as snails, bloodworms and daphnia. A varied diet keeps their colors vibrant.
  • Temperament: They can be territorial; keeping one male with several females reduces nipping. Avoid mixing them with large or slow-moving fish.
  • Enrichment: Plenty of plant cover and snail treats encourage natural hunting behaviour.

To create a natural environment, consider adding hardy live plants. Incorporating live plants for fish tanks improves water quality and offers shelter, enhancing the well‑being of these charismatic puffers.
