Overview
Pygmy Corydoras (Corydoras pygmaeus) are diminutive catfish ideal for nano and community aquariums. Their spotted bodies, active swimming and shoaling behaviour make them a joy to watch.
Housing and Water Conditions
- Group size: Always keep at least six individuals. Larger shoals make them more confident and active.
- Tank size: A 10‑gallon planted tank provides ample space. Use fine sand to protect their barbels.
- Water parameters: Maintain a temperature of 72–78 °F and a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.5–7.5). Gentle filtration ensures clean, oxygen‑rich water.
Diet and Tank Mates
Pygmy corys are micro‑predators and scavengers. Feed finely crushed flakes, micro pellets, and live or frozen micro foods like daphnia and baby brine shrimp. They also forage through detritus. Compatible tank mates include small rasboras, micro tetras and dwarf shrimp.
Provide plenty of plants, leaf litter and driftwood to mimic their natural habitat. Planting live plants for fish tanks helps create shaded areas and surfaces for biofilm. With attentive care, these miniature catfish will display schooling dances and even spawn, rewarding aquarists with one of the most endearing sights in a nano tank.
