Species Profile
Rainbow cichlids (Herotilapia multispinosa) are unique among cichlids for their modest size and peaceful demeanour. Their name comes from the changing colours they display, which intensify during courtship and when content.
Tank Setup
- Size: A 30‑gallon tank suits a pair.
- Water: Maintain temperatures of 75–82 °F and a pH of 6.8–8.0. Good filtration and regular water changes keep them healthy.
- Décor: Provide caves and rocks for hiding and open areas for swimming. They appreciate hardy plants and will not typically uproot them.
Diet and Compatibility
Rainbow cichlids are omnivorous. Offer high‑quality pellets, flakes, vegetables and occasional live or frozen foods. They coexist peacefully with tetras, catfish and other small cichlids. Avoid aggressive tank mates that may bully them.
These fish may pair off and spawn on flat surfaces. They exhibit parental care, guarding eggs and fry. To mimic their Central American habitat, plant robust live plants for fish tanks like swords and Vallisneria. A colourful, thriving cichlid will reward you with flashes of gold, orange and blue across its body.
