Species Overview
The red dovii (Parachromis dovii) is a rare colour morph of the wolf cichlid, native to Central American lakes and rivers. Known for its intense aggression and predatory instincts, this fish is suited only to expert aquarists.
Housing Requirements
- Tank size: Juveniles can start in a 125‑gallon tank but adults require 300 gallons or larger. Provide thick glass or acrylic; these fish are powerful.
- Water: Maintain temperatures of 75–82 °F and a pH of 7.0–8.0. Use strong filtration and aeration.
- Décor: Incorporate large rocks, caves and driftwood to create territories. Leave open water for swimming.
Diet and Behaviour
Red Dovii are carnivores. Feed a varied diet of high‑quality pellets, fish fillets, earthworms and crickets. They will attack and eat most tank mates; therefore, keep them singly or as a mated pair. They are territorial and can injure or kill other fish.
Keeping such a large and aggressive cichlid requires dedication and experience. Reinforce lids and cover filters to prevent damage. For decoration, you may add hardy live plants for fish tanks like anubias attached to rock; however, be prepared for rearrangement. With the right setup and respect for its temperament, a red dovii cichlid can be a breathtaking centrepiece fish.
