Species Overview

The high‑fin banded shark, also known as the Chinese banded shark, is a member of the sucker family. Juveniles display dramatic black bands and an oversized dorsal fin that gradually reduces as they mature. They can reach three feet in length and live for decades.

Housing Requirements

  • Tank or pond size: Juveniles can be housed in a 75‑gallon tank, but adults need ponds exceeding 300 gallons with plenty of swimming space.
  • Water: Keep water cool (60–72 °F) and well oxygenated. Maintain a pH of 6.5–8.0 and use smooth substrate to protect their mouths.
  • Diet: Primarily herbivorous, feed algae wafers, blanched greens, sinking pellets and occasional protein treats.

Behaviour and Compatibility

High‑fin banded sharks are peaceful and do well in groups. They coexist with other cool‑water species like koi and goldfish. Provide currents to simulate river habitats and plenty of open space.

Adding marginal live plants for fish tanks in ponds not only creates shelter and shade but also aids in water purification. With proper care, these fish grow into graceful giants and make striking centrepieces in large cold‑water setups.
